What To Pack First When Moving

What To Pack First When Moving

Moving to a new house place has always been exciting to many people as it’s the beginning of a new page in life. Even though it may seem difficult, it’s actually relocating things from where they always are to another place. Therefore, it’s very important to be prepared both mentally and emotionally and prepare your items well for relocation. When moving out, it’s crucial to sort your things out to pack what’s necessary and to leave behind what you may not need.

Good preparatory steps ensure a smooth relocation, but what you pack is equally important. As a matter of fact, packing is the most laborious and time-consuming activity which you have to deal with whether you like it or not. For packing to be successful, keep hold of a packing list, packing materials, observe packing rules, and stay away from packing mistakes.

Where to start packing for a move

Items in storage areas

It goes without saying that what you need the least should be the first things to pack. If you probably have stored anything in the basement or in the garage, the probability is that you have already forgotten them. Thus, revisit the places you stored them and after assessing them, sort them into three different categories:

  1. To be discarded: These are the worn out, outdated and damaged items
  2. To be donated, sold, or given away: These are the items you don’t need anymore but could be a blessing to someone or could raise a penny if sold
  3. To be packed for moving: These are the items you value and want to move out with them into your next world

The first batch should be dealt with forthwith by burning or throwing them away.

Secondly, organize how to sell the second batch (online will do), how to donate to the less fortunate, or how family and friends can access them. The third batch is the most important and you should pack and prepare it for shipment earlier enough before the relocation date. On this, ensure that:

  1. You prepare a detailed inventory of packed items and have a written document about their current condition
  2. Protect your items against dust, moisture, and bugs
  3. Label the boxes according to what is packed
  4. Stack the boxes accordingly where they won’t destruct you
  5. Prepare large equipment accordingly such that those with sharp and cutting edges are wrapped, and those with fuel are drained
  6. Avoid packing typical garage contents such as chemicals, car batteries, antifreeze, and corrosive items because no moving company is allowed to relocate them

Non-essential items

Packing Tips

Non-essential here means anything you need but you can live without for few days without missing them much, they include;

  • Decorations and artwork: Anything that makes your house cozy but has no importance such as souvenirs, framed pictures, and decorative objects
  • Collectibles: Even though items like photo albums are important, you don’t them need prior to the moving day
  • Extras: You should put any extra towels, office supplies, and bedding in the moving box because you may not need them much before relocating
  • Books: Before moving to a new place, you will be busy organizing how you will carefully pack your things without a mess and you won’t have time to read books
  • Video games, hobby materials, CDs, and DVD’s: If you love entertainment, you may keep few items such as CD’s to soothe you during the strenuous week, but it’s advisable to pack leisure items beforehand
  • Offseason shoes, clothes, and accessories: If you are sure not to use anything for over a month, pack it
  • Specialized kitchenware: When preparing to move out, you rarely have time to prepare any food you wish. Therefore, pack all those appliances you use rarely in advance, such as ice-cream cups, condiment dishes, extra dishes, cake plates, barbecue tongs, food storage containers, etc.

After packing all the items you use infrequently, you can now comfortably proceed to other items such as jewelry, games equipment, and toiletries that are not used daily. After that, pack the non-perishable pantry items, sewing supplies, office supplies, and miscellaneous curios that you can survive without for few days.

Rooms to pack first

Emovers

At times, you may be confused on which room to pack first and which to pack last. To make it clear, less commonly used rooms such as living room and the guest room should be the first, followed by the most essential rooms such as the bedroom, kids’ room, bathroom, and the kitchen.

The few items not yet packed such as electronics, kitchen items, clothes, and any other essential items should be packed up few days before the moving day. It’s therefore important to ensure that you and your family have enough clothes to wear for those days and also the ones to wear during the moving day. Also, take out plastic utensils to use and also tell your kids to choose one set of toys they value so much and pack the rest. Ensure that you have extra bags and boxes to use in case you find some valuables unpacked.
