1.	DON’T PLAN AHEAD;
•	On the day of the move just throw things in whatever boxes are lying around, and stuff the rest in trash bags.
•	Don’t bother with mail forwarding; the post office will find you eventually.
•	Don’t cancel cable and internet; they’ll figure it out when the bill’s not paid
•	Ditto for water, power & trash
•	Arrange hookup of all utilities after you’ve settled in, it’s fun to rough it without electricity, internet, TV and hot water.
•	Kid’s school records? Whatever.

2.	DON’T HIRE PROFESSIONAL MOVERS;
•	Beer and pizza bribed friends to help 20 years ago, maybe it still works.
•	Pick up an illegal down by the hardware store…he might be a criminal or addict, but it’s only for one day, right?
•	Call Bubba from Craig’s list- he will bring a pickup truck or throw things into a U-haul. He, too, might be a criminal or addict…but, you know. (Keep count of the items in your underwear drawer.)
•	Don’t check with BBB, online reviews, or friend’s referrals; what do they know?
•	Don’t check with the state to see if your mover is operating legally: Being licensed is really only important if your stuff goes missing, or gets damaged, or if the mover gets hurt on your property. Besides, even if they don’t have any training or equipment, they probably can’t break or steal too much stuff.

3.	DO WAIT UNTIL THE VERY LAST MINUTE TO SCHEDULE YOUR MOVE.
•	Your landlord won’t really charge a full month’s rent if you get out a day late…will she?
•	There are probably movers just sitting around waiting for your call, on the last day of the month, when everyone wants to move. You can just book them on a moment’s notice.
•	You don’t really need to allow time to clean – losing the deposit isn’t that big a deal.
•	Maybe those new people don’t really want to move in on the first.
•	The closing on the new place probably won’t get delayed.
•	You know everything will go like clockwork…Murphy’s law only applies to other people.

Unfortunately, moving for some is a time they’ll remember for getting ripped off or taken advantage of by scammers. In 2011, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) received more than 9,000 complaints against movers. Those complaints include goods being “held hostage” for additional payment, lost or stolen belongings, damaged items, late deliveries, and giant increases over quoted estimates. You can avoid moving hassles by doing some simple research.

Before you commit to a mover, check up on them at the BBB website, which offers more than 17,000 moving-related business reviews. Also, explore the resources available at the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), including the ability to search for an AMSA-certified ProMover. The government requires a special license for local and interstate moves. You can check your local moving company’s status online at Washington Utility and Transportation commission: http://www.utc.wa.gov/regulatedIndustries/transportation/householdGoods/Pages/HouseholdGoodsCarriers.aspx
Check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website for interstate moves.

(Express Movers, Inc has earned an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and we are “ProMover” certified with AMSA.)

In addition to choosing the right mover, you’ll need to select proper insurance coverage for your move. You have the option of purchasing full (replacement) value protection, with or without a deductable, instead of the required minimum coverage of .60 cents per pound that comes with all moves at no cost. Before you opt for this added coverage, check your homeowner’s insurance; some policies cover moving mishaps. Read the consumer guide provided by your mover to be aware of the limitations of this coverage if you do opt to purchase it.

Our long stretch of dry weather makes this the ideal time to schedule the move you’ve been planning. Packing? Why not be kind to your wallet and save a tree – get half off the cost of our eco-friendly reusable totes when you schedule your move with us by October 31. We are happy to pack for you, but if you prefer to do it yourself, these roomy totes will be delivered (in the Seattle metro area) prior to your move and picked up again after 2-3 weeks. With no hauling, assembly, costly packing tape, flattening or disposal of heavy cardboard, these totes make packing and moving a cinch. Unlike totes with folding “flap” tops, our snap-on lids protect your goods from dust and rain. Comfortable handles make them easy to carry, and they can be conveniently stacked. Why not call and schedule today?

1. Time is money when you are paying movers by the hour. Be well prepared and avoid “surprising” movers with extra goods or obstacles.

2. Measure large furniture in advance to insure it will fit through doorways at your new home

3. Tape all boxes securely with packing tape- not duct, Scotch or masking tapes; it takes time to repack when the bottom drops out!

4. Label boxes by room to save time when movers unload them into your new home.

5. We are happy to go to each room but you can reduce load time by placing boxes in garage or main floor as you pack.

6. We will gladly Disassemble and reassemble beds, cribs, entertainment units, etc., but you can reduce time/cost if you do this yourself.

7. Disconnect all electronics are disconnected, tape wires to the items, disconnect washers/dryers/refrigerators and other large appliances.

8. Moving all miscellaneous unboxed items such as lamps, pictures, toys, yard tools, etc., yourself can save time and money.

9. Reserve ample parking for the moving trucks; long walks add to the load and unload time
